Can stories change the real world?
Who am I? Who am I becoming?
In Middle School Language Arts, students will grapple with these types lifelong questions as they learn to analyze ideas and express themselves. They will read and write a variety of texts, research topics of their choice, and learn to discern fact from fiction. We emphasize students exploring their own interests while also being exposed to new ideas and widening their global perspective. Long-form texts in year one will include: Farewell to Manzanar, The Outsiders, and student-chosen free-reading books (at least one per semester). Shorter readings will be provided online. Note: the curriculum will repeat every three years, so that students who enter in 6th grade will not repeat any information in 7th or 8th.
Key Topics:
- Lifelong Learning Skills
- Media Literacy
- Critical Thinking
- Self-Expression
Longer Texts:
- Farewell to Manzanar by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston – Semester 1
- The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton – Semester 2
Special Notes: Families are responsible for obtaining copies of the longer texts listed above (library or ebook options are OK).
